The Plain Words Money Glossary

Money and work terms, one page each, written for someone reading about them for the first time. If a word needs a second word to explain it, the second word gets its own page.

Gross and net

In plain words
Gross is the whole amount paid to you. Net is what is left after costs and tax are taken out.
Example
Made-up numbers: a client pays 500 (gross). Fees take 50 and 100 is set aside for tax, so 350 is net.
Watch for
Any claim that quotes a gross figure and says nothing about net.

Invoice

In plain words
A bill you send for work you did, with the amount and the date it is due.
Example
"Invoice 12: ten hours of work, due in 14 days." A made-up line.
Watch for
Work done without one in writing. Late payment is harder to chase.

Break-even

In plain words
The point where what you have taken in equals what you have spent. Before it, you are behind.
Example
Made-up numbers: spend 300 to start, take in 20 a month, and break-even is month 15.
Watch for
Plans that never show a break-even point, or that put it very far away.

One rule for every page

Plain words first, a made-up example second, a warning third. Every sample number says it is an example.

Nothing here tells you what you will earn. A glossary only helps you read other people's claims more carefully.
